Finding Balance-Paddleboard Yoga at Cinnamon Shore!
Part of the health and wellness offerings at our village
For years, we've partnered with Texas Surf Camps to offer a variety of activities for our homeowners and guests--and paddleboard yoga at our Dune Pool has drawn lots of interest in recent years.
.
Once a novelty, this trending exercise has only grown in popularity, and it offers benefits that can't be matched by traditional yoga classes. Called Stand Up Paddleboard Yoga, or SUP, it works best on calm bodies of water -- a harbor, a bay, or pool. Imagine practicing your poses with gently undulating waters beneath and Gulf breezes washing over you. It's one of the most stress-relieving ways to do yoga!
Held at our Dune Pool throughout spring and summer, these classes invite a small number to center themselves atop sturdy boards. According to islesurfandsup.com, SUP yoga requires more strength, balance, and focus. It list 7 benefits:
- Refines the yoga techniques you use on land
- Strengthens new muscles not regularly challenged
- Relieves stress, as you're practicing outdoors breathing fresh air and taking in the scenery
- Improves breathing techniques
- Increases flexibility
- Drastically improves balance
- Gets you outside!
Doyou Yoga, an online yoga resource, says that when you practice SUP, you must "be present." In an article for Doyou, Julie Phillips-Turner writes that "you have no choice but to 'be here now' when it comes to practicing yoga on your floating yoga mat." And she stresses that it helps beginning yoga students to be more mindful as they practice beginning poses atop the board, and it challenges advanced practitioners, too. "SUP board will humble many of those who have mastered many poses," she writes, adding that SUP will take advanced students back to the basics of mindfulness.
From head stands to simple Downward Dog poses, you can relax, de-stress, and feel more fit after one of our sessions.
Our Partner and Instructors
Texas Surf Camps has a great reputation, as Cinnamon Shore only partners with the best! All the instructors are CPR- and First Aid-certified, and camp founder and director is Morgan Faulkner--one of the best-known professional surfers to come out of Texas. A Port Aransas native, the 33-year-old makes his home here, but has traveled the world to catch waves, still spending time in Hawaii each year. He ensures that surf and paddleboard lessons are taught by experts who keep water safety in mind at all times.
The best part of it all is that if you fall of the board, it's still fun! Just splash down and get back on.
